(p. 86) Angélique's gaze wandered from the pleasant-faced young priest to her son. She hardly recognized him. And yet it was undoubtedly he. He had grown so, and beneath his black school jacket he was as thin as a rake. His waist, girt with a belt on which hung an ink-horn and a pen-holder, was as slender as a woman's. He was twelve! He would soon be up to her shoulder. It was when he threw back a troublesome lock of his long hair - with an off-hand uncontrite gesture - that she realized why she had been so overcome when she saw him. He looked more and more like his father. That clean-cut profile, those slightly hollow cheeks, those full and mocking lips were beginning to emerge from his childish features. It was the face of Joffrey de Peyrac if you allowed for the disfigurement of his scars. Florimond's hair seemed to be twice as thick as before, and it was jet-black. There was a gay, mocking twinkle in his eyes that belied his quiet, well-behaved schoolboy bearing.

(p. 165) There was a loud bang on the door followed by the appearance of a happy, smiling, and sun-tanned Florimond.
(p. 166) She watched him with pleasure as he moved back and forth through the room, thinking what a splendid lad he was now, and remembering all the worries she had had about his delicate helth when he had been small. He had done his hair like Romain de l'Aubignière and Baron Maudreuil, and wore it long, held by a pearl-studded headband, topped with feathers and fur tails, which suited him extremlly well. He too was handome, as handsome as Joffrey de Peyrac would have been had he not been disfigured by a sword-cut in his youth. Florimond was almost as tall as a man now but his smile was still the smile of a child. (p. 232) His delicate brown profile stood out like a medallion against the blue sky, and she thought with a quickening of the pulse that he was Joffrey de Peyrac's son. (p. 274) Florimond's prodigious strength had already turned him into something of a legend. The American colonists liked superlatives, and Florimond was by way of becoming 'the strongest young man in North America'. As she looked proudly at him, Angélique remembered how frail he had been as a small child. (p. 392) Now he noticed that the young man was the very image of his father, but that there was something about his features, above all about his expression, it might have been his smile, that reminded him irresistibly of Angélique's face.
