The Japanese musical: Angélique - The Story of flame Love

From January 1st till February 12th 1980, there was played musical romance 'Angélique - The story of flame love' in the Japanese Takarazuka Grand Theater (Hyogo, Takarazuka-city). Other performances took place at the theatre Tokyo Takarazuka Theater (Tokyo) from April 3rd till April 30th 1980. The performance was realized by the musical theater troupe Takarazuka Revue Company. This company is all-female troupe with a long tradition and women who act solely under the stage names, are playing all roles in theater productions processed in the style of Broadway musicals. In addition to classic works of world there are also adapted the stories from shōjo manga and Japanese folktales in their performances. That is why for musical Angélique there was used as a model the manga by Toshie Kihara, who created this comic based on the novel by Anne Golon. Toshie Kihara portrayed the figures of novel fairly accurately in her manga, so the musical rendition of these characters largely corresponded with original novel. The screenplay was written by the first book Angélique, the Marquise of the Angels, and the audience had the opportunity to see the scenes that have not been processed in similar works. The central figure of the story was the Count Joffrey de Peyrac played by actress Yuri Haruna, the top star of troupe at that time.

The Japanese musical: The blue Rose of god Mars-Angélique II

After the success of the first musical Angélique, the musical theater troupe Takarazuka Revue Company had put on the stage other theatrical performance based on the novel by Anne Golon. The musical romance 'The blue rose of the god Mars - Angélique II' was played in the Japanese Takarazuka Grand Theater (Hyogo, Takarazuka-city) from October 3rd till November 11th 1980 and than in the theatre Tokyo Takarazuka Theater (Tokyo) from March 4th till March 30th 1981. The screenplay drew on the most important plot twists of the book the Road to Versailles and of the first part of the book Angélique and the King - the War in Laces. The central figure of the story became the Marquis Philippe du Plessis-Bellière played by actress Rei Asami, who debuted in lead role in this musical. Despite the fact that the period of Angélique's second marriage was briefly retold only in a few scenes in this show, there was also possible to watch even such storylines of the novel that not occur in the other adaptations. The troupe Takarazuka Revue was able to create an interesting and original musical show of which the stage design were also inspired by the Japanese manga.

Robert Hossein: Angélique Marquise des Anges

Angélique is not a new theme at the theater not even in France. From September 1995 till February 1996, Robert Hossein was putting on the stage theatre performance 'Angélique, Marquise des Anges' in the Sports Palace in Paris, as well as before his monumental projects 'Danton and Robespierre', 'Les Miserables' or 'Julius Caesar'. From the end of the seventies, his directorial successes, especially 'Kean' (1987) and 'Cyrano de Bergerac' (1990) with Jean-Paul Belmondo, are legendary due to the fact that these performances lured even those viewers who often do not go to the theater. However, the director underestimated a situation with his cast in the lead role of the Count de Peyrac who was not 30 but 70 years old in this Angélique project. He chose for his partner Cécile Bois who was twenty-five at that time. The young French actress currently has a filmography quite well, and just the role of Angélique helped her enough in her career.

The premiere of musical took place September 22, 1995, and although Robert Hossein created a grand musical show, the putting of musical was suspended for lack of viewers already after five months. It could be said that the arrangement of performance was based on rather film processing by Bernard Borderie than on a novel, and perhaps there was the viewer deprived of a certain originality that could be expected from the theatrical rendition. Contrary, there was the program brochure which could engage the viewers attention. This brochure contained not only the standard information about the performance but also the foreword about the author of novel Anne Golon and her bibliography, and many detailed articles on the history and personalities of 17th century of France, who are closely related to the storyline of performance. In 1995, the musical was released as a soundtrack on CD 'Angélique Marquise des Anges' in co-produced by Eddie Barclay - EMI Music Publishing France.

The French musical: Angélique

Maximally in accordance with the work by Anne Golon, there ought to be created the new musical Angélique with original music and textual part in the years 2007 - 2008, and the album's release ought to be provided by Sony Music. Text and music by: Bill Ghiglione, Lea Ivanna, Nadia Vsevolodovna. Unfortunately, more informations about this project and its implementation are not available in this time.

The Czech musical: Angelika

From March 6, 2007 till June 30, 2008, and from January 2 till February 28, 2010, there was played the Czech musical 'Angelika' in Prague's Divadlo Broadway (The Theatre Broadway). This musical is created with the music by Michal David, and also with the use of the music compositions by Michel Magne, created for the film by Bernard Borderie in the sixties. The performance with its range of plots corresponds roughly five Borderie films, but according to a debut press release on May 3rd 2007 it could be assumed that this is rather a parody – if we consider that Angélique reunites with Joffrey in Toulouse after his feigned death, but he leaves her now; or the fact that her friends from the Court of Miracles work as eunuchs for the Sultan, where she gets into after her kidnap by Bakhtiari Bej :-) In most miscellaneous roles, there are alternated even three Czech singers.

In 2007 the company Popron Music released the recording of theater performance on DVD titled 'Angelika. Markýza muzikálového nebe' (Angélique, the Marquise of the musical Heaven), and soundtrack on CD 'Angelika'.

The Czech musical 'Angelika' returned to the stage of Prague's Divadlo Broadway on February 18, 2016. At the beginning of November 2015, there took place an audition for the cast of the restored theater performance with the previous range of plots, and from mid-February 2016, there were under way the dress rehearsals. The management of the Divadlo Broadway is planning the commissioning of the musical for the whole season 2016, and final performance would be held on November 27.
